I am working on a book about the physical pain of grief, I hope to have it published in about a year (I am working on another book at the moment). I would like to have anyone who has had pain up to 6 months after a loss to write me and tell me your story. I will include it in the book (I will change your name so no one knows who you are). I hope to collect as many stories as possible to include.

I have received a couple of stories already. One was from a lady called Ann (not her real name) who lost both parents to cancer. She had taken care of them and she had no real health problems until their deaths. Now she has many problems, including physical pain, but she also has a lot of mental problems from the grief, including OCD, bi-polar, and many more. She also has a feeling of abandonment. I am working with her to find a solution to her problems.

I also got word of another woman who came down with a pinched nerve only a month after she lost her husband. I suspect the back pain is caused from the stress of losing her husband, and could be removed with counseling and/or hypnosis.

If you have started having pains, either mental or physical, after the loss of a loved one, or a divorce or a move, etc. Please visit your medical doctor to see if he can find a cause, but also be aware that MDs do not usually know that a physical pain can exist from a mental state, so he may find something physically wrong that is not the cause of your problem (for instance, a herniated disk does not always cause pain). If that is the case, if he does something physical to stop the pain, it may work, but be aware you will have a pain of some other type show up later if it is caused from your grief.

If you have a story to tell me, or would like to have some help with your problem, please email me at griefrecoverythatworks@gmail.com I will do my best to help you get relief or help you find someone in your area that can help you.

According to John E. Sarno, M.D. in his book, “The Divided Mind”, emotions are the major cause of many bodily pains.

Dr. Sarno’s theory, which I agree with, is that the mind will reduce oxygen to certain parts of the body to cause pain so the person will be distracted by the pain and not have to deal with the emotions.

Consider for a moment if a person were molested as a child, in order not to have to deal with the emotional pains, the body would “protect” the person by making them have stomach pains.

It can work the same way with the emotions of grief. If since your loss you have started having pains in your body that you, and maybe even your doctor can’t explain, it may be coming from your mind.

According to Dr. Sarno, this is a psychosomatic problem. I don’t like that term as it has been viewed as being all in your head for many years, and any pain you are having is definitely not in your head! Even though your mind is the cause of this pain, the pain is very real.

We know that the mind operates our body. Our heart and other organs, along with our digestive system, and almost all other functions of our body are controlled by the mind. So it is not a stretch to believe the mind can control the oxygen being delivered to the cells.

Now you may ask what the big deal is with the cells doing without a little oxygen, but according to Dr. C. Samuel West, D.N., N.D., Chemist and Lymphologist, anytime the cells lose oxygen, pain is the result. So lack of oxygen to the cells equals pain.

Dr. Sarno even goes to say that most back, and neck pain, headaches, carpal tunnel and all Fibromyalgia is caused by emotions. I am not sure I agree with this 100%, but I do believe much of the pain in the body is caused by the mind to cover the emotional trama of our lives. Grief is definitely one of those traumas.

I will cover this subject in much more depth in later posts, but I wanted to share with you the idea that if you started having new pains in you body after your loss, it may be caused by your grief!!!
